Immigrant Teachers in Australia: Negotiating Identity, Navigating Adaptation, and the Paradoxes of Belonging
The teacher shortages in Australia have prompted the government to prioritise visas for overseas teachers who wish to work in Australia. Yet, the prevailing expectations of a specified desired background, habitus, and pedagogical ideas of how a teacher should be, act, and understand their work and place in society have made the professional transition significantly more challenging for immigrant teachers who do not fit into this frame. Drawing on the insights from my research on teacher diversity, this session examines the differential, diverse and stratified experiences of Asian immigrant teachers as they negotiate their identities, navigate adaptation, and establish belongingness in the Australian education environment.
