Description
Nudging away procrastinationCompleting tasks in a timely manner is often a struggle, as the allure of short-term gratification frequently leads to postponing activities until the last moment. This tendency is widely recognized as a significant hurdle to efficient task management. We assess the impact of nudging through the use of general reminders alongside reminders that present information about current peers, as well as peers who have achieved notable success in the past. Our analysis reveals that social comparison information nudges reduce procrastination but lead to a tradeoff of low-quality submission. While individuals may desire to outperform their peers, they may not dedicate sufficient time to understanding the tasks at hand. Overall, we find that individuals are influenced by their peer network, and social information nudging only incentivizes low-quality early submission. Our findings suggest that social comparison information nudges can effectively reduce procrastination provided that strategies to enhance submission quality are implemented.
