Developing community-engaged pedagogy to enhance teaching practice of Cross-Curriculum Priorities of Asia and Australia’s Engagement with Asia in Australian Curriculum

The Asia and Australia’s Engagement with Asia (AAEA) priority in the Australian Curriculum reflects Australia’s extensive engagement with Asia in social, cultural, political, and economic spheres (ACARA, 2022). Our previous study found that Australian Curriculum content that has been included to support the AAEA is minimal, unevenly distributed across key ideas, learning areas, and explanatory materials, and that the inclusion of content is different between the overall Australian Curriculum and its State and Territory derivatives (Zhang et al., 2020). However, the scarcity of teaching resources and the lack of professional development in culturally responsive teaching impeded the teaching practice of school teachers. Meanwhile, the local Chinese cultural communities have preserved the rich historical and cultural resources of Chinese migrants’ contributions and incorporations into local Australian society. This project aims to collaboratively work with school teachers to re-create the teaching plan by exploring and incorporating local Chinese cultural resources into the subjects and to work with key stakeholders to co-design various age-appropriate education programs for local Chinese cultural organisations to consolidate students’ learning outcomes in the classroom. This panel discussion proposal explores the development of community-engaged pedagogy to elevate the teaching practice of Cross-Curriculum Priorities, particularly focusing on "Asia and Australia's Engagement with Asia." This session will bring together educators and researchers from Monash University to illuminate diverse aspects of this pedagogical framework. The session aims to provide valuable insights into fostering effective pedagogical practices that align with the Cross-Curriculum Priorities of "Asia and Australia's Engagement with Asia" in the Australian Curriculum.
