Description
The Psychology of Belonging: Boosting Belonging in Schools. For the Teaching Purposeful Brains Conference
Three decades ago, belonging was identified as a fundamental human need (Baumeister & Leary, 1995), yet much work continues today to understand its purpose, drivers, and outcomes. Moreover, debate still exists, at a theoretical and empirical level, around how belonging should be defined, which leads researchers to question what belonging actually means to the general population. This virtual talk will discuss belonging, and school belonging more specifically. It will step through how belonging and school belonging has been defined and conceptualised, discuss the latest research concerning problems and benefits, and present systemic solutions for schools that directly draw from student perspectives.
