Description

The pandemic, as a critical turning point, highlighted the competition for time, resources and even presence of the Arts within Initial Teacher Education (ITE) programs as a constant pressure for Arts ITE educators. Simultaneously, the rise of online Arts education content delivery has created additional challenges for Arts educators, as collaboration and practical participation are difficult to facilitate with authenticity in the two-dimensional space of online classrooms but are still vital elements of a robust Arts experience. As a result, a number of Arts educators from across Australia have been regularly meeting online to share, explore and experiment with ITE arts learning practices in the online space, with the aim of establishing authentic learning and assessment activities for our own programs. However, as Elliot Eisner reminds us, one must first be an artist, if we wish to instill aesthetic dispositions, creativity, and artistry within our teachers and their students. With this recognition, we began considering our arts ITE teaching from an A/r/tographic perspective, interconnecting the work of each of us as artist, teacher, and researcher. This perspective and approach provided unique opportunities to engage in and examine the influence, processes and potentialities of the theory methodology nexus, which became the critical juncture of space, place and ideas for new learning.

In this workshop we explore the a/r/tographic beginnings of this national community of practice, sharing both the processes and theorisations at the nexus of our engagement as artists, researchers and teachers. Further, we consider the (in)betweens and yet to be knowns, especially focussing on the possibilities of how we do educational research in and for future online classrooms. The 90 minute workshop begins with an understanding of the theoretical underpinnings of our online community of practice in the virtual ‘place’, alongside the practical enactment of theory as a collaborative such that participants gain an insight into the process employed. Participants will then be given an opportunity to participate in, and respond to, practical a/r/tographic provocations, after which sharing of affective and impactful outputs will yield further insights into the artist/researcher/teacher nexus and its power for enhancing authentic teaching of the arts in a range of contexts.
