Description
There are growing reports of communities protesting against tourism in the media. They are reacting to experiences of subjugation and displacement due to tourism, in their own community! It is unfortunate that these experiences are happening at all, and that they are increasingly common is even more concerning. Experts have recommended and crafted spaces for community-led change and tourism, though, in the main, planning and regulatory responses do not address community concerns, instead introducing palliative small-scale interventions.
Using a doughnut-model as a frame, I draw upon various collaborative projects to highlight lessons for community-orientated tourism planning and management. I prompt discussion on the purpose of tourism and tourism education, proposing a mission-based community-centred approach, moving from the dominant tourist-centric model.
