How our work in Sustainability informs our teaching and understanding of STEAM
STEAM is about combining five different subjects depending on how the acronym definitions are applied such as Science, Technology, Environment and Engineering, Art, and Mathematics. In the current study we include the Environment alongside Engineering due to its ethical significance. The onus of the discipline integration is to elicit deep levels of learning by drawing on diverse disciplines. STEAM helps early childhood educators expand on what is possible in their planning for learning, by considering multiple ways to learn/teach about a subject. This study focuses on initial teacher education students from diverse cultural backgrounds who undertook a STEAM unit as part of their postgraduate coursework in early childhood education. We are curious about how the unit addressed their diverse cultural backgrounds and whether the unit embraced these perspectives and invited the potential for change.
