International architecture experts, Indy Johar (Architecture 00, UK) and Professor Laura Lee (Carnegie Mellon University, USA) will headline the Association of Architecture Schools of Australasia (AASA) 9th International Conference 2016, hosted by the UTS School of Architecture.

Taking place from 30 September to 1 October, the conference, titled “Project to Practice: Innovating Architecture”, will focus on the relationship of architecture to Australia’s emerging innovation economy.

Through an examination of projects and practices in both professional and institutional contexts, the conference will position forms of innovation specifically in the context of Australia.

"(“The need for innovation in Australia has never been more urgent.” said AASA conference co-director and UTS Head of Architecture, Professor Anthony Burke.

“As our economy adjusts to a post-resources present, the conference will look at how the sector is shaping the policy and funding levers of tomorrow.

“That the practice of architecture will be affected by large shifts to the economy, workplace and education is a certainty. However, the potential of innovation agendas to alter the very core of architectural practice is less clear.”)"
Aimed at developing and refining an understanding of the context and challenges of innovation for architectural practice and education, the conference seeks to create a critical benchmark from which to address the extent of structural change required, or already happening, across the architecture discipline.

“The conference will explore points of view on innovation and its many forms within architecture, and correspondingly how those changes are propelling new forms of work in the sector, and driving change in how we even educate the next generation of architect,” said Professor Gerard Reinmuth, AASA conference co-director and UTS Practicing Professor of Architecture.

The conference is the first event of the 10th annual Sydney Architecture Festival, which this year celebrates the bicentenary of the Office of the NSW Government Architect.

The AASA 9th International Conference 2016 Project to Practice: Innovating Architecture will be hosted by the UTS School of Architecture and the NSW Architects Registration Board. The conference directors are Professor Gerard Reinmuth, Timothy Horton and Professor Anthony Burke.
