Description
In 2016, the Victorian Royal Commission into Family Violence expressed concerns that the voices of children in child custody matters are not adequately heard. Evidence highlights that children who have experienced the family law system through judges, lawyers and mental health professionals want to understand and participate in the process in a meaningful way. Despite this, the system remains largely adult-focused. Currently, there is very little child-or-young-person-focused education and information available that can help them to understand the roles of these professionals and the family court processes their families are going through (Commissioner for Children and Young People, 2018). As a way forward, partnerships between researchers and those who contend with the real-world needs of children in custody matters can make a significant impact on the development of evidence-based interventions that focus on the child’s perspective. The presentation will outline the research partnership between Monash University and the To Be Love Inc. organisation, and report on recent findings that identify some of the challenges around accessing evidence-based child focused interventions. The presenters will also outline the next stage of their research partnership which aims to generate an evidence base that informs the development of interventions that address the needs of children and young people (8-17 years) involved in the family law system.| Period | 8 Jul 2022 |
